"Insist Upon Yourself"
Sassy Mohen is a fresh indie filmmaker who thrives on powerful character driven stories. After being handed the directing reigns on a 30+ cast of middle schoolers in a mystery murder play at age 13, she was quickly self-taught in the ways of discipline, character development, over dramatic actors and how get a full house to shush it. Since then, she has written, directed & produced several award winning films from features, shorts, plays and the new media of web-series.
Originally born in New York City, her love for film-making was sparked in elementary school when her parents enrolled her in a television production class. While attending Dodge College of Media & Film at CHAPMAN UNIVERSITY she wrote & directed her first feature, HAPPY HOLIDAYS. This marked her the first Chapman student to not just take on the task…but actually finish it. And finish it she did in December 2007 on a micro-budget, so small that when told to most film-makers the usual response is, “No freaking way.”
Upon completion, Sassy took the film on tour around the country with co-producer Matthew Stubstad and sold it independently in the then new realm of self-distribution on the interwebs. Through this she turned a profit on HAPPY HOLIDAYS and today the films website has received over 100,000 hits from around the world.
In 2008 she began an eight-year documentary, ON THE VERGE, following the lives of four girls as they follow their passions despite their lack of money. That same year she entered her next feature TRUE PERFECTION in the “First Cut Film Series” competition. Currently in the top 1%, if won CYAN PICTURES will give the project a budget of $1,000,000 dollars (cross your fingers). A pilot of the pre-revised first act, was shot of TP on the newly released RED Camera in 2008. With this, a team has assembled funding to make the full feature through a successful KICKSTARTER.COM campaign.
In September 2009, Sassy founded ARDENTLIFE STUDIOS with business partner, Gabe Passiles. A production company, Ardentlife also offers fresh insight to all creeds of artists from around the world via, photography, films, blogs & weekly spotlights on an artist of the week. In 2009, ArdentLife shot it’s first film which S.Mohen wrote & directed titled EVE IS DEAD, inspired by the passing of one of Sassy’s closest friends.
While prepping for the 6 month run of True Perfection production, Sassy shot web-series, ABOUT ABBY, a comedy about a cock-eyed optimist in search of “true love” in Los Angeles. Including much of the same cast & crew as TRUE PERFECTION, Abby was released online February 2011. It was an official selection of the LA WEB FEST, where Sassy won the BEST DIRECTOR AWARD and lead actress Keghan Hurst won best actress.
Currently, Sassy just wrapped shooting True Perfection, is knee deep in post-production and has started writing her next untitled third feature due to be shot in Arlington, Va in 2012.
